Our Involvement
The Social Planning Council is involved in several immigration and anti-racism initiatives in the North Okanagan. These include: hosting and organizing events and workshops as part of the Thompson Okanagan Respect Network; hosting the Vernon Local Immigration Partnership Council and Service Agencies Grounded in Equity (SAGE) anti-racism working group; and overseeing the implementation of Vernon’s Settlement and Immigration Strategy.
The Social Planning Council is committed to the Truth and Reconciliation process and actively works toward meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous communities. We recognize the historical and ongoing harms caused by colonial policies and acknowledge our responsibility to be part of the healing and change. As part of this commitment, we allocate project funding to ensure that Indigenous perspectives are meaningfully included in the development of local strategies and initiatives. We strive to build relationships rooted in respect, collaboration, and accountability, working alongside Indigenous communities to repair past harms and create a more just and equitable future.
We recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing process and that much more needs to be done. We remain committed to continuous learning, meaningful action, and strengthening our efforts toward true reconciliation.
